Choosing a touchscreen laptop

A touchscreen lets you scroll, zoom, sign documents and draw directly on the screen. Every 2-in-1 has one, and so do some regular laptops.

Touch is most useful on laptops that fold into a tablet, or with a pen for notes and sketches. On a regular laptop, it’s handy for scrolling and signing but most people still use the touchpad. Check the Pen row if you want to write on the screen.

Touchscreens are usually glossy, so they reflect more light, and they add a little weight and cost. Compare brightness if you work in bright rooms.

Frequently asked questions

Is a touchscreen laptop worth it?

Yes if you'll draw, take handwritten notes or use it as a tablet. On a laptop that stays in laptop mode, most people rarely touch the screen.

Do touchscreen laptops work with a pen?

Many do, but not all. Check the Pen row: "Included" means it's in the box, "Supported" means you buy a compatible pen separately.

Do touchscreens use more battery?

Slightly, because of the touch layer. The difference is small compared with screen brightness and the processor.

Can I turn off the touchscreen?

On Windows, yes, through Device Manager. On Chromebooks and most other laptops, touch stays on but doesn't get in the way.
